One of the many unfortunate by products of the COVID-19 era is that we have witnessed crimes against and hatred directed at visible minorities in BC. These are events that have brought to the surface, the systemic and widespread existence of racism in our society. At the same time, recent events in both Canada and the US have demonstrated that systemic racism is not only apparent within civil society but is also deeply embedded in the structures that govern us. The murder of George Floyd and the multiple police-related deaths in both Canada and the US have caused us to confront the issue of law enforcement and systemic racism. Questions around police reform and accountability are the subject of serious public debate and discussion.
This course will take a critical approach to identifying the problems, both systemic and individual, that race can pose for the administration of criminal justice. With a better understanding of the issues and challenges with race and criminal law—everyone in the system, including lawyers and judges, can work together to improve criminal justice.
