About the Special Guests
News anchor, Ian Hanomansing currently hosts THE NATIONAL from CBC in Vancouver.
Born in Trinidad and raised in Sackville, New Brunswick, veteran host and reporter Ian Hanomansing began his broadcasting career at CKDH Radio in Amherst, Nova Scotia, working at radio stations in Moncton and Halifax before joining CBC in Halifax in 1986. His assignments took him to Toronto the following year and eventually to Vancouver, where he was a national reporter for 14 years.
Among his major assignments: the Exxon Valdez oil spill and San Francisco earthquake (both in 1989), the Los Angeles riot (1992), Vancouver's two Stanley Cup riots (1994 and 2011), the Hong Kong handover (1997), the Slave Lake Alberta wildfire (2011), the Humboldt bus crash (2018), and seven Olympic Games, the most recent in Sochi in 2014.
He graduated with an honours BA in political science and sociology from Mount Allison University in Sackville, New Brunswick where he was valedictorian; he also has a law degree from Dalhousie University in Halifax. While in university, Hanomansing won six national university debating and public speaking championships.
Larry Pozner is a nationally recognized trial lawyer, lecturer, and author. His book Cross Examination: Science and Techniques (Lexis, co-authored with Roger Dodd) is now in its 3rd edition and continues to be America's bestselling book on cross. Reviewers have described the book in words such as "long," and "in English."
Larry's lectures are built around the newest tools for understanding how to motivate jurors to award us the verdict we seek, the advanced techniques of cross that can immediately result in an advantage in trial, and how we can all become quicker at crafting the cross examinations that win cases.
Larry began his career in the Colorado Public Defender system. He later formed a criminal defense firm, and a subsequent firm handling both plaintiff and defense sides of document-intensive civil matters for business large and small, but if we are being blunt, mostly large. For many years Larry defended the Denver Broncos franchise in trials including the lawsuit challenging Pat Bowlen's purchase of the team. Larry won, which is why he could remain in Colorado.
Larry is a past-president of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He is listed in Best Lawyers in America for Bet-the-Company litigation, and in Criminal Defense, both White Collar and Non-White Collar crimes.
He has lectured in 48 states, throughout Canada, and strangely, Brazil. As a teacher at the University of Denver College of Law he was voted Best Professor. But that may have been due to his "nobody flunks" policy.
For way too much information see his article Case One, Day One, Colorado Lawyer May, 2018, or Lessons Learned – Criminal Defense Edition, Colorado Lawyer, March 2019.
Rose Shawlee is Associate Counsel with Harper Grey and a member of both the Wills & Estates and Business Law Groups. She brings more than 15 years of experience to her practice, which is primarily focused on assisting families and businesses with their planning, succession and reorganization, estate, and business needs.
Rose strives to make life's inevitabilities, death and taxes, less daunting a topic for clients while being alert to the complications these raise from a legal, family, tax, probate fee, and cost perspective.
There are many tools offered by the legal system to achieve estate planning and business succession intentions, but rarely are all of them necessary. Rose's objectives are two-fold: ensuring that clients are aware of the various tools, while at the same time making sure that problems aren't over-solved by implementing mechanisms that aren't proportionately practical or offer limited cost-benefit.
Rose is a regular contributor (as presenter, author, and editor) on topics of estate planning, estates, corporate freezes, and trusts for CLEBC and the Pacific Business & Law Institute. She also provides community learning seminars in respect of personal planning, estates, and business succession and tax planning
As a volunteer director for the Charlford House Society for Women, Rose continues her commitment to support resources for women and their growth and independence.
