About the Course Chairs
Andrew Morrison's preferred areas of practice are commercial litigation and alternative dispute resolution with a focus on resolving shareholders disputes, franchising issues, and trade-mark disputes. Andrew represents many purchasers of condominium units who are involved in disputes with developers, or who require advice about their contracts. In addition, Andrew has substantial experience in construction law, employment law, creditor's remedies, securities litigation, and professional negligence claims.
Andrew was called to the bar in 1999 and has been with Shields Harney since its inception. Prior to joining the firm, Andrew was a legal policy analyst for Industry Canada and examined the role of voluntary codes in regulating various industries. He also worked as a legal clerk at Tilleke & Gibbins, a leading Asian law firm based in Bangkok, Thailand specializing in intellectual property issues.
Andrew earned a BA from McGill University and a law degree from the University of Victoria. He has successfully completed the Canadian Securities Institute course, and he has also been a trade-mark agent since 2002.
Andrew has appeared in the Supreme Court of BC, the BC Court of Appeal, the Federal Court of Canada, and the Federal Court of Appeal, as well as many tribunals such as the Trade-Marks Opposition Board, the BC Human Rights Tribunal, and the Employment Standards Tribunal.
Andrew has published papers in various professional publications including Appeal: Review of Current Law and Reform, published by the University of Victoria Faculty of Law. Several papers co-authored by Andrew are included in the book Voluntary Codes: Private Governance, the Public Interest and Innovation, published by the Carleton University School of Public Policy and Administration.
Andrew has been on the faculty of several CLE courses relating to litigation and often speaks on legal issues relating to franchising.
John Douglas Shields was called to the BC bar in February 1985, after obtaining degrees in civil and common law from McGill. He is a principal in Shields Harney, a commercial litigation boutique with offices in Vancouver and Victoria. He has a varied commercial litigation practice that includes arbitrations, mediations, and civil contingency fee work, with extensive civil litigation experience throughout BC. John is a strong supporter of CLEBC, and is a frequent contributor both as chair and presenter at courses, including topics on mastering evidence, affidavit practice, chambers practice, and creditors' remedies.
