Who should attend: Negotiators of all levels of experience, lawyers who attend mediations, business and government officials, and anyone who wants to increase competency in negotiation skills and processes

Learning level: All levels

Successful negotiation is about more than advocating effectively for a position. For experienced counsel, the real advantage often lies in what happens before and between the obvious bargaining moves—how well you prepare, understand what matters to the other side, frame the issues strategically, manage behaviour, and advance your client's interests.

This practical program looks beyond baseline techniques to explore the most commonly ignored dimensions of negotiation that create opportunity for advantage at the table.

Participants will gain practical tools and insights to sharpen their existing negotiation skills, including strategies for stronger preparation, structuring the first offer, recognizing behavioural and psychological traps, avoiding self-defeating language, managing difficult reactions, and saying "no" without closing the door.

After taking this course, you will be able to:

  • more effectively open and close negotiations
  • avoid common pattern mistakes in strategy and behaviour
  • understand the brain science driving behaviour within negotiations
  • refine your skills to extract valuable information from the other side
  • understand common traps in the use and misuse of power

Law Society of BC CPD Hours: 6 hours (this course will contain a minimum of 1 hour pertaining to professional responsibility and ethics, client care and relations, and/or practice management)

Course Instructor
