Who should attend: This course is for corporate solicitors and commercial litigators; it will also be of interest to in-house counsel and defence counsel
Learning level: Intermediate
White collar crime issues increasingly arise in corporate, commercial, and regulatory matters, often long before criminal charges are contemplated. Corporate solicitors, commercial litigators, and in-house counsel must be prepared to identify potential risks, respond to investigations, and advise clients when criminal, regulatory, and civil issues intersect.
This course provides a practical overview of the white collar crime landscape in Canada and its implications for legal practice. Faculty will examine key developments in areas such as fraud, securities enforcement, insider trading, money laundering, cryptocurrency, tax evasion, workplace fatalities, environmental offences, and asset forfeiture. Participants will also gain insight into responding to search warrants and investigations, managing legal and reputational risk, and navigating the complex enforcement environment facing businesses, directors, officers, and employees.
Whether advising clients on compliance, managing a corporate crisis, or addressing issues that arise in litigation, you will leave better equipped to recognize exposure, protect client interests, and respond effectively when white collar crime concerns emerge.
Law Society of BC CPD Hours: 6 hours (this course will contain a minimum of 1 hour pertaining to professional responsibility and ethics, client care and relations, and/or practice management)
