Learning level: All levels
From Ukraine, Iran, and Gaza to the corridors of Davos, the rules-based international order forged after the Second World War is under unprecedented strain. But what is the law of armed conflict, after all?
This one-hour lunchtime session offers non-military lawyers an accessible introduction to international humanitarian law: the framework governing how wars are started and how they are fought. This introductory lecture will cover the post-WWII Geneva Conventions framework, conspicuous recent breaches by state and non-state actors, and emerging theories of reform.
No prior military or international law background is required. This is the law of armed conflict for the rest of us.
Law Society of BC CPD Hours: 1 hour (this course does not contain professional responsibility and ethics, client care and relations, and/or practice management)
Course Instructor
Emily MacKinnon — Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP, Vancouver
