People aged 65 and older are a quickly growing demographic in Canada, with the size of this population projected to double worldwide over the next 25 years. While longer lifespans are in many ways a boon, this demographic shift also gives rise to new and evolving challenges. Among these is the trend towards progressively increasing vulnerability in the elderly, both physical and cognitive, and the consequent need to provide protection to victimized members of this group.
Lawyers are often uniquely positioned to assist in quarterbacking such protective measures, particularly if they are attuned to the applicable law and available resources. This course is designed to provide legal professionals with an up-to-date overview of the prevailing jurisprudence, practical advice on how to prevent and curtail elder abuse, working with clients who may have capacity limitations, and more.
Law Society of BC CPD Hours: 6 hours (this course will contain a minimum of 1 hour pertaining to professional responsibility and ethics, client care and relations, and/or practice management)
