Who should attend: Lawyers, judges, firm leaders, articling students, law students, paralegals, legal support staff, service providers, and others that have an interest in advancing the conversation about improving mental health within the legal profession

Learning level: All levels

Co-hosted by the Law Society of BC and the Continuing Legal Education Society of BC, this event is an opportunity to bring together the legal community to continue the conversation on mental health in the legal profession.

Phase II of the National Study on the Health and Wellness Determinants of Legal Professionals in Canada was released in October 2024. It builds on the first phase of the study from 2022 that presented an overview of the mental health and wellness of Canadian legal professionals. Phase II contextualizes the findings and provides detailed feedback to inform recommendations that consider regional factors.

This year's forum will open with an overview of the Phase II report and the recommendations specific to BC, followed by updates from the Law Society of BC on what our regulator is doing in response to the mental health and wellness issues that legal professionals in BC face.

This will be followed by panel discussions between legal professionals and mental health professionals on practical strategies for advancing personal mental health, especially with regards to burnout and vicarious trauma. We anticipate an interactive event with designated time for discussion and questions so we can engage in a meaningful dialogue on the topic of mental health.

Join us in continuing the conversation on mental health in the legal profession. It is only through continued engagement and discussion that we can affect positive change together.
