Who should attend: The content is directed at lawyers with less than three years practice experience, but this may also be of interest to more experienced lawyers
Learning level: Fundamental
As a new lawyer, finding an appropriate balance between maintaining your own boundaries and creating a strong impression in the workplace can sometimes seem impossible. With a multitude of competing demands, and an inherent power imbalance weighing against new lawyers, the idea of saying "no" can induce anxiety.
However, it is possible for you to set limits and maintain your reputation as an ambitious lawyer at the same time. This free webinar will provide practical guidance and relatable scenarios to empower new lawyers to handle situations where they need to say "no" with professionalism and tact.
In this program, you will learn:
- the types of situations where saying "no" may be necessary, and how to understand your priorities
- the anatomy of saying "no," including how to clearly communicate your needs and propose alternative solutions whenever possible
- how to manage difficult emotions, such as fear and guilt, that arise when confronted with having to say "no"
- how to prevent future issues by establishing limits in advance while maintaining professionalism
- how pressures to say "yes" may be felt differently by individuals of diverse cultural backgrounds and identities
- what to do when saying "no" is not a realistic option, and how to stay focused on what you can control to make the situation more manageable
