In the world of trial techniques, cross-examination gets a lot of attention while direct examination is usually taken for granted. It is often assumed that direct examination is a very straightforward matter. After all, it is your witness telling his or her own story, is it not?

Experienced counsel know that matters are not so simple. It is probably true that more cases are won or lost on direct examination than on cross-examination. In this vein, this full-day program will improve your skills in direct examination through a review of the principles and practices that underlie effective preparation and execution of this trial technique.

About the Course Chairs
Jordanna Cytrynbaum (she/her/hers) is a partner in the Litigation Group at Cassels. Jordanna's commercial litigation practice focuses on complex multi-party litigation. She brings strategic thinking and practical problem-solving to all her clients. Jordanna regularly represents clients before all levels of court, administrative tribunals, and in arbitrations.

Jordanna regularly contributes to various law publications and is a frequent presenter on a variety of corporate, commercial, real estate, and employment law topics for the Canadian Bar Association, Trial Lawyers Association of BC, PBLI, the Vancouver Leasing Conference, CLEBC, CREW, and for clients. She is the co-author of the Real Estate chapter for Annual Review of Law and Practice and the Collapsing Deal chapter of BC Real Estate Practice Manual.

Prior to joining Cassels, Jordanna served as the lead of the Commercial Litigation and Employment Law Specialty Groups at a boutique litigation firm based in Vancouver.

Joan Young, partner at McMillan LLP where she heads the firm's Vancouver Advocacy & Litigation team, is a senior litigator, widely recognized for the depth of her experience in complex litigation and dispute resolution matters, competition/antitrust class actions, and product liability and regulation.

She routinely acts for the world's leading brands and companies. She has been defence counsel in multiple price-fixing, consumer, privacy and product liability class actions including Air Bag Control Units, Optical Disk Drive, Roll-on, Roll-off Car Carriers, Gmail Privacy Breach, Opioids, Facebook Privacy Breach, Internet Search Ads, Capacitors, Auto-parts (including Forged Steel, Spark Plugs, Wire Harness, Ignition Coils, Motor Generators, Heating Control Panels, Wipers, Starters, Fuel Injectors), Diesel Engine Defeat Devices, Ramen Noodles, and the "Bridgemark" Securities Secondary Market Claim.
