Who should attend: Lawyers, judges, firm leaders, articling students, law students, paralegals, legal support staff, service providers, and others that have an interest in advancing the conversation about improving mental health within the legal profession
Learning level: All levels
Co-hosted by the Law Society of BC and the Continuing Legal Education Society of BC, this two-part event is an opportunity to bring together the legal community to continue the conversation on mental health in the legal profession.
Recently, a study was undertaken on this subject, and the report on phase one of the National Study on the Health and Wellness Determinants of Legal Professionals in Canada was released, outlining the mental health of Canadian legal professionals. Over 400 pages in length, the report contains findings on the prevalence of a variety of mental health indicators among legal professionals and recommendations.
The first part of this event will include an overview of the findings in the lengthy report followed by a round table discussion between legal professionals on their personal experiences of some of the issues covered in the report. We anticipate an interactive event with designated time for discussion and questions so we can engage in meaningful dialogue on the topic of mental health.
The second half of this event will take place on October 3, 2023. It will focus on strategies for advancing personal mental health and practical strategies for practitioners, firms, and other legal employers to actively work toward improving mental health within their organizations and the profession. The specific topics that will be covered in October will be directly informed by the questions and feedback we receive from attendees of the June event to ensure that we bring together speakers to discuss the issues that are of most interest to you.
Join us to continue the conversation on mental health in the legal profession. It is only through continued engagement and discussion that we can affect positive change together.
