Who should attend: Family, wills and estate mediators, anyone wishing to extend their practice to include elder mediation, lawyers practicing in the area of elder law, family law and wills, estates and trust law. This training may also be of interest to social workers and health care professional who have a particular interest in the elder population.

Learning level: All levels

With the Canadian adult population over 65 years of age expected to reach 24.5% of the total population in the next 15 years, disputes with older adult participants are rapidly expanding. This workshop will give you the practical skills and substantive knowledge needed to effectively resolve disputes that impact aging adults. Those wishing to effectively and competently practice in elder mediation need to know about the laws relevant to older participants and be aware of common age-related issues. The successful Elder Mediator will have the skills to guide individuals and their families to creative win-win solutions.

This three-day, online-only workshop will count for 24 hours of mediation training and will include exercises and role-plays simulating elder disputes. You will hear from guest speakers who will share their experiences and expertise in this area, with speakers from BC and recognized experts from other jurisdictions.

After taking this program, you will:

  • gain insight into the benefits of elder mediation
  • understand and appreciate the unique characteristics of elder mediation
  • be aware of the issues commonly faced by elders and their families
  • know how to use your mediation skills as they need to be used in elder mediation

For those seeking certification in the elder mediation area, this program will provide 24 of the 40 hours required for the certificate. The remaining 16 hours will be provided at a later date. This certificate program matches the competencies for certification in other jurisdictions, but is tailored to the Canadian context. Attendees will receive a certificate of completion for the course which will verify completion of this course towards certification offered through BC Elder Life Mediation.

Please note: This course is offered remotely through a Zoom platform. A device equipped with a camera and microphone will be required to participate.

Law Society of BC CPD Hours: 24 hours (including a minimum of 2 hours pertaining to professional responsibility and ethics, client care and relations, and/or practice management)
