Who should attend: New and experienced lawyers who draft any type of legal document and want their writing to be clear and concise while still reflecting the critical terms of the deal

Learning level: All levels

Clarity. Brevity. Engaging. These are three qualities of good legal writing. Mastering these qualities is what takes your writing to the next level. Legal writing is a foundational skill but is applied in all aspects of law, whether it is contracts, corporate documents, memos, or litigation documents. Judges and senior lawyers have little time to read through and interpret a long document you present to them, so it is crucial to get to your point and get there fast. You want your writing to be useful to assist readers make their decision and not leave them to decipher what your main point is when they take the time to read.

This webinar will provide examples of what constitutes good legal writing and the common mistakes. You will learn how to be clear and concise in your legal writing, while still being able to make your point. Contrary to what some may think, sometimes less is more.

After taking this course you will:

  • understand the difference between plain language and clear legal writing
  • learn how to write for your intended audience
  • learn how to eliminate unnecessary words, circular constructions, repetition, and meaningless legal jargon
  • learn how to be economical and efficient in your legal writing
