Defamation law, media law, and the law surrounding privacy continue to evolve and morph in the face of rapid technological change, the growth of the Internet, and the boom in global communications. The fundamental issues remain the same but there are also many new twists engendered by new technology and its operation within larger social trends. The reality for everyone is that our digital identities are becoming ever more important.
This comprehensive one day course will review a range of individual, corporate, and media issues in defamation, privacy, and media law as well as exploring practical practice matters facing counsel. This year’s program will feature leading counsel on key issues in this important and expanding niche of contemporary practice.
At this course you will learn:
- important black letter law: the essentials of defamation law and the law around responsible communication and confidential sources
- important practice elements such as SLAPP suits and the interplay between libel, privacy, and online communications
- future directions: defamation law reform and emerging issues in defamation law and media law
All of the above packaged in 6.0 hours of CPD towards the LSBC 12.0 hour annual requirement!
Law Society of BC CPD Hours: 6 hours (a minimum of 1 hour pertaining to professional responsibility and ethics, client care and relations, and/or practice management)
