(Original Course Date: November 22, 2019)
Who should attend: Lawyers who know that fluff is for pillows, not legal documents—those who want to learn to distill their writing to its essence and become more persuasive in the process
Learning level: All levels
Join us as nationally recognized legal educator Stuart Teicher, Esq., gives an engaging program on persuasive writing. In this three hour program, Mr. Teicher, calls upon his talents as a "CLE Performer" and his training as an adjunct law professor to explain how to create powerful persuasive writings while staying on the right side of the ethical divide.
In the first hour, known as the "Persuasive Writing Power-Hour," Stuart explains the fundamental process for creating winning briefs in the modern practice. Mr. Teicher explains how tried and true concepts of persuasive writing remain relevant, but when viewed in a different light, yield a new paradigm called the "Surgical Strike." Stuart explains how clear, concise and direct writing is the key to persuasiveness. Topics covered include the importance of adopting a Captisuading™ approach and the power of implementing "Plain English."
In the second hour, Stuart gets into the "Details of Persuasive Writing," when he focuses on extraordinary execution. Mr. Teicher explains the anatomy of a persuasive writing and teaches how to strengthen the building blocks of your writing by developing a more vivid vocabulary and building action sentences. Stuart discusses specific writing tactics and reveals some interesting "tricks of the trade." Finally, he explains how to ensure success with a structured editing process.
In the final hour, Stuart talks about the ethical issues in persuasive writing. Whenever lawyers put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard), we venture into ethically dangerous territory. The ethical issues in persuasive writing aren't always as obvious as other areas of the practice, but they're still potentially damaging. How far can you stretch your characterization of a situation? Is a "fact" really a "fact" according to the rules? When does zealous advocacy turn into misleading statements? Join us as the CLE Performer helps keep you on the "write" side of the ethical divide.
