About the Course Chairs
Scott MacDonald is a senior litigation partner at Richards Buell Sutton LLP with over 30 years' experience in litigation, arbitration and mediation of commercial disputes. He has extensive arbitration experience as counsel and more recently as an arbitrator in commercial lease disputes. His preferred areas of practice include real estate (with an emphasis on commercial leasing disputes), insurance, employment, environmental and commercial litigation and dispute resolution.
Scott is a frequent lecturer on a broad array of legal subjects including commercial lease disputes, property and casualty insurance matters, employment matters, civil litigation and arbitration. He is a contributing author and presenter for the Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia and has planned, coordinated and conducted a number of conferences for it over the years. He has also appeared as a guest lecturer on employment law for The University of British Columbia, Faculty of Law.
Scott's speaking experience includes seminars and presentations for CLEBC and the Pacific Business & Law Institute. He developed the Commercial Tenancy Law Course for the Building Owners & Managers Association, B.C. Over the years he has made multiple presentations to industry organizations such as the B.C. Shopping Centre Association, the International Council of Shopping Centres, BOMA BC, the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver, the Lower Mainland Group of B.C. Land Surveyors and the Insurance Bureau of Canada.
Ross McGowan is a partner of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP and is National Chair of the firm's Fraud Law Practice Group. Ross provides advice to financial institutions and others on operations, payment systems, policy advice, and regulatory compliance, including work specifically focused on combating loss arising from fraud. Ross has acted on matters ranging from litigation defence work of individual customer complaints to mass tort Ponzi scheme claims. He provides operations and compliance advice on design of banking systems, account agreements, policy manuals, and regulatory compliance matters affecting financial institutions' operations. Ross also works with fidelity, E & O, and D & O insurers to provide coverage and subrogation advice relating to fraud losses, bondability of employees, policy design, and defence of claims. Ross has been a guest speaker at many national and regional industry group conferences and has authored numerous articles on banking, bills of exchange, and fraud related topics. He received an international film award for developing an employee fraud awareness video titled "Consequences" and was recognized in Who'sWhoLegal as one of Canada's leading business crime defence lawyers. Ross was admitted to the BC bar in 1988.
