About the Course Chair
Peter German, QC, is President of the International Center for Criminal Law Reform and Criminal Justice Policy at UBC.
A lawyer and member of the Ontario and BC bars, he holds graduate degrees in law and political science, including a doctorate in law from the University of London, which focussed on international asset recovery. He is the author of Proceeds of Crime and Money Laundering, published by Thomson Reuters. His awards include Officer of the Order of Merit of Police, and the Gold Medal of the International Society for the Reform of Criminal Law. He is a frequent lecturer in Canada and abroad and has served as an examiner of the United Kingdom's compliance under the OECD Convention on the Corruption of Foreign Public Officials, and as a delegate to the United Nations Convention Against Corruption.
Dr. German previously served as a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, retiring as Deputy Commissioner for Western and Northern Canada, and as a Regional Deputy Commissioner for Correctional Service Canada. His postings in the RCMP included as a detective inspector responsible for corruption investigations in the National Capital Region and Director General of Financial Crime. He spearheaded the creation of market enforcement, international anti-corruption, and integrated counterfeit enforcement teams. Dr. German was team commander for the 2008 kidnapping of Canadian diplomats held by Al-Qaeda in North Africa and was responsible for RCMP resources in the urban domain during the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Dr. German is the principal of a company providing strategic leadership and investigative advice to public and private entities. In September 2017, he was appointed by the Attorney General of BC to be the independent reviewer of allegations of money laundering in BC casinos, resulting in a 250-page report and 48 recommendations to government. Also, in that year, he was appointed as a Queen's Counsel.

About the Featured Speaker
The Honourable David Eby, QC, was elected as the MLA for Vancouver-Point Grey in 2013 and re-elected in 2017. He is the Attorney General.
David served as the Official Opposition spokesperson for Housing, Liquor, Gaming, TransLink, BC Housing and BC Lottery Corporation.
He is an award-winning lawyer, noted for his work on constitutional and administrative law issues related to the protection and promotion of human rights and democratic freedoms.
A proud resident of the Kitsilano neighbourhood of Vancouver, in his professional career David was an adjunct professor of law at UBC, president of the HIV/AIDS Legal Network, and served on the Vancouver Foundation's Heath and Social Development Committee. From 2009 to 2013, David ran the BC Civil Liberties Association as executive director.
David has been recognized as one of BC's most effective advocates. His work at Pivot Legal Society to protect the human rights and dignity of homeless and underhoused residents of Vancouver's Downtown Eastside was recognized in 2011 by the UN Association in Canada and the BC Human Rights Coalition with their annual award. He is the author of several books and articles on legal rights. His handbook on arrest rights is now in its third printing, with more than 10,000 copies in circulation.
David loves to ride his bike, practice yoga, play music with his band, and catch local comedy and music shows in Vancouver.
