About the Course Chairs
John-Paul E. Boyd is a lawyer, lecturer, author, and consultant. He is the principal of John-Paul Boyd Arbitration Chambers, a member of the bars of BC and Alberta, and a fellow of the International Academy of Family Lawyers. John-Paul spent 14 years in private practice in Vancouver, serving as a litigator, arbitrator, mediator, collaborative practitioner, parenting coordinator, and children's counsel before joining the Canadian Research Institute for Law and the Family at the University of Calgary as its executive director in 2013. He returned to private practice in 2018, and now provides services as a family law arbitrator, mediator and parenting coordinator throughout BC and Alberta.
John-Paul is a frequent speaker on family law, justice processes, and dispute resolution for the National Judicial Institute, the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts, continuing professional education providers and the National Family Law Program, and has taught the upper-year family law course at the University of Calgary. His written work has been published by the UBC Law Review, Canadian Family Law Quarterly, the International Journal of Law, Policy and the Family, the federal Department of Justice, the National Judicial Institute, and the Nova Scotia Department of Justice. He is a juror of the Walter Owen Book Prize, awarded by the Canadian Foundation for Legal Research, and the Allan Falconer Memorial Essay Contest, awarded by the Canadian Journal of Family Law, and is a member of the International Society of Family Law and the ADR Institute of Canada.
John-Paul is a recipient of the CBA's National Pro Bono Service Award, the UBC Law Alumni Association's Outstanding Young Alumnus Award, the CBA BC's Pro Bono Award, and the Distinguished Service Award presented by the Law Society of Alberta and the CBA Alberta.
Alyson Jones, MA, RCC is the Clinical Director at Alyson Jones & Associates where she leads a team of therapists who specialize in separation and divorce issues. She is a Registered Clinical Counsellor, child and family therapist, parenting coordinator, divorce coach, author, and educator. Alyson is also an Adjunct Faculty Member at the Adler University, and has been featured in the media sharing her extensive knowledge in regards to divorce and separation issues.
Alyson developed and oversees the Family Forward Reunification Program which assists families in navigating through highly complex family issues. Drawing on her extensive experience in parent education, developmental psychology, family systems, high conflict, collaborative law, parenting coordination, reunification therapy and co-parenting counselling, Alyson has assisted many families in reducing conflict, staying focused on the best interests of the children, and working towards a healthier resolution for the entire family.
Morag MacLeod, QC is a senior family law arbitrator, mediator and parenting coordinator in private practice in Vancouver. She is the President of the BC Parenting Coordinators Roster Society and a member of TLABC, CBABC, Family Mediation Canada, the BC Hear the Child Society, and the Family Law Advocates Group. She is the past chair of the Family Law Litigation Group of the Trial Lawyers Association of BC. She is on the Editorial Board of the CLEBC Family Law Sourcebook for BC, a contributing author to various CLEBC and other legal publications, and is a frequent presenter on family law, parenting coordination, high conflict parenting, and out-of-court case resolution topics.
