Who should attend: Lawyers who are considering or have started to transition out of practice; all solo and small firm lawyers; large and medium-sized firm lawyers or government lawyers looking to transition from their current employer to solo practice with some additional know-how, existing law firm infrastructure, and perhaps even a client base; lawyers planning to move or change practice areas or geographic locations within the next 10 years.
Learning level: Intermediate/Advanced
Many of us work with professional clients—physicians, dentists, orthodontists, veterinarians, and the like—who have plans in place for the orderly sale or transition of their practices upon their retirement or death. But how many of us lawyers have considered that idea for ourselves, let alone have begun taking practical steps that might make such a transition possible, or perhaps more lucrative? For many lawyers, the prospect of retiring and exiting the practice of law can be a delicate or daunting one, but it might just be a challenge worth facing, and in fact, it could be measurably valuable (financially speaking) to do so long before we think we are "ready" to retire.
This new program from national CLE presenters Chris Osborn, JD, and Michael Kahn, JD, LPC, of ReelTime CLE, is designed to help solo and small firm lawyers think proactively about succession planning, and in particular how to maximize the value that could be obtained for a viable, transition-ready practice.
Join us for a lively discussion of an original short film by Michael and Chris depicting the common obstacles and challenges that a lawyer may face when selling a practice, and an opportunity to develop practical strategies for overcoming the ones you may face in your own practice. Even if you aren't sure the time is quite right yet, come learn about practical steps you might be able to take now, long before you are ready to "make the leap," to increase your chances for a softer and more satisfying "landing."
Workshop participants will have the opportunity to:
- think through the goals and milestones for a successful practice sale or transition
- understand the process and timetable for an effective transition
- identify the ethical pitfalls and other challenges of selling a practice
- understand how to value your practice or one you would like to buy
- hear success stories from lawyers who made it work well, for both the buyer and seller
