Learning level: All levels

Algorithms and predictive technologies permeate our lives. These technologies predict people with whom we may want to connect, forecast when we will deliver packages from far-flung locations, project genome sequences to develop promising life-savings drugs, and more.

Whether we know it or not, data and algorithms also underlie the technology of core online legal research tools and digital records analysis for document production. We are even now using them to forecast case outcomes.

Lawyers who do not understand these technologies, or who are unsure how to harness them, risk being left behind, making them vulnerable to the inappropriate or sloppy use of such processes. Lawyers who master these technologies, on the other hand, can vastly improve their efficiency and effectiveness.

During this session, leading Canadian experts will share with you how quantitative approaches to organizing legal information will change how we approach legal research and thinking. You will learn how decision analysis can help you better frame litigation decisions and how the same forecasting technology used by engineers, actuaries, and sports teams can be used to forecast litigation outcomes. Litigators and solicitors will learn how things work "under the hood" of their favourite drafting and research technologies.

Law Society of BC CPD Hours: 3 hours (this course will contain a minimum of .5 hours pertaining to professional responsibility and ethics, client care and relations, and/or practice management). Please note: The CPD hours of the rebroadcast will either meet or exceed the CPD hours of the original live webinar course.
