Post-Pandemic Modernization of Law Firm Technology

Law firm technology hasn't had to change much over the last couple of decades, due to many factors including:

  • lack of innovation in the prevalent legal software applications
  • the adoption of cloud computing was slower for law firms (as compared to other industries)
  • law office personnel primarily worked in close physical proximity to each other, so the need for paperless technology was not as great

Working from home in a distributed fashion has changed all this, and during the pandemic, many law firms have had no choice but to rapidly modernize in a short period of time. Join this session to find out how law firms are leveraging modern technologies to increase efficiency and communication now and after the pandemic ends.

Essential Cybersecurity for Law Firms

As modern technology becomes prevalent in law firms, so too does the importance of cybersecurity to protect clients' confidential data and keep law firm employees productive. Hackers are getting more sophisticated and are targeting businesses of all types, including law firms of any size. Both on-premise and cloud systems are vulnerable to cybercrimes, and many breaches are an inadvertent result of users' actions. In 2020, the Law Society of BC published 10 Simple Steps to Protect Your System from a Data Breach, providing some guidance on reasonable steps that a law firm can take to protect itself. Join this session to learn how to implement these steps.

Understanding Technology Best Practices in the Law Firm Context

Managing partners of law firms will often have outsourced or internal technology advisors, but just as with finance and HR, it is important that they understand technology best practices at a high level so they know what questions to ask of their advisors. This session is aimed at managing partners, to provide them with the knowledge they need to help them manage their firms. Join this session to learn enough about technology to make executive-level decisions, but not get mired in the details.

Technological Building Blocks of a Law Firm

Starting a law firm is an exciting time for those involved—the opportunity to create something new. After securing personnel and clients, the next step for founding partners is to select the technology on which to run their business. Technology is an important building block for a law firm, and possibly even more important than a physical office location… because with the right technology, a brick-and-mortar office may not even be necessary. Join this session to learn how to start a law firm in the modern era.
