KEY CONCEPTS IN MONEY LAUNDERING LAW AND GLOBAL FINANCIAL CRIME IMPACTS (10:00 am – 12:15 pm)
Day One of this course focuses on key concepts in money laundering law in a practical way for lawyers and law firms, as well as government agencies involved in financial crime gatekeeping or enforcement. It provides an overview of the key areas emerging of concern for a global understanding of money laundering concepts and financial crime in BC and provides lawyers and attendees with practical knowledge from experts in their fields. The key concepts in Day One include anti-money laundering law for regulated sectors from a global and correspondent bank perspective; anti-corruption and economic sanctions law; the role of Mexican cartels and transnational organized crime; the risks of politically exposed persons for the legal profession; understanding shell companies and beneficial ownership; and defending clients in financial crime cases.
The speakers include former members of the FBI responsible for many of the largest kleptocracy cases in the world, former members of US Treasury Department in transnational organized crime analysis, Global Financial Integrity—the leading NGO for the study of illicit finance globally, the head of AML compliance for a global bank, and lawyers who excel in their areas of financial crime.

Day Two of this course focuses on high risk areas for financial crime, continuing the focus on delivering to lawyers and attendees, practical and usable information from experts that they can deploy for their practice for a greater understanding of the global nature of financial crime risks and the inter-connected nature of money laundering and application of the law. The key topics in Day Two include a drill down on the latest in the law on seizure orders and proceeds of crime in Canada; an overview of the steps BC has taken to address financial crime; the organized nature of wildlife crimes and its role in money laundering across the globe; the latest laws surrounding Bitcoin and other digital currencies; and the Wirecard FinTech fraud story told from the viewpoint of the team that helped discover the fraud in Europe.
The speakers include Mr. Justice Paul Riley and Minister David Eby, QC, as well as one of the leading lawyers in digital currency law, two of the leading organizations in anti-organized financial crime work, and one of the leading securities investigations firms.

MASTERING MONEY LAUNDERING INTELLIGENCE AND CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIONS (10:00 am – 11:00 am)
Day Three of this course wraps up the previous two days and focuses on practical information to master money laundering intelligence and criminal investigations, from two of the leading experts in the world and imparts necessary skills for every law firm for its onboarding of clients and to gain a better understanding of how intelligence is gathered and cases are built in financial crime, as well as teaches key concepts on investigations from experts who have handled some of the most sensitive and complex financial crime cases in the world.
Speakers for this session include Irene Kenyon, the Director of Risk at Fiveby, a US intelligence organization, and formerly with US Treasury and FinCEN. Ms. Kenyon is a leading counter-terrorism and money laundering expert, whose analysis work was included in the President's Daily Brief. She is joined by Don Fort, the Director of Investigations at Kostelanetz and Fink LLP and immediate past Chief of the IRS's Criminal Investigation Division, who spent nearly 30 years in law enforcement for the US federal government. He oversaw numerous high-profile cases, including the college admissions scandal known as "Varsity Blues" that ensnared several celebrities and Vancouver's David Sidoo; the Paul Manafort and Michael Cohen federal tax investigations cases; the takedown of the largest darknet child exploitation website funded by Bitcoin; and two Chinese nationals involved in laundering $100 million in the hack of a digital currency exchange.
