Trauma-informed lawyering is an essential ethical competency for lawyers, judges, and law students. It will transform your relationships—with your colleagues, clients, and witnesses—and your approach to the practise of law. By becoming trauma-informed, you will gain understanding of:
- the neurobiological effects of trauma
- how to recognize trauma in your client or witness
- the skills required to adapt your engagement, examination techniques, and litigation approach to minimize (re)traumatization or avoid triggers
- why cultural humility is necessary when working with people of diverse backgrounds
You will learn how to identify indicators of vicarious trauma, how it can impact lawyers, and what you can do to safeguard your mental health. You will also learn strategies to minimize the risks for vicarious trauma in your organization.
Trauma-informed legal practice will positively inform and improve your approach to legal practise, foster innovation, strengthen your client engagement skills, and increase client satisfaction outcomes. Expanding your awareness of vicarious trauma will minimize the risks of adverse mental health effects while also positively enhancing your work environment, increasing productivity, and boosting long-term lawyer retention rates.
Law Society of BC CPD Hours: 6 hours (this course will include a minimum of 6 hours of professional responsibility and ethics, client care and relations, and/or practice management)
