What lawyers need to know about the BC housing market’s newest tax: basic rules and common misconceptions

Who should attend: All lawyers with a practice in real estate. This course may also be of interest to business and tax lawyers, both litigators and solicitors, those who advise clients about tax issues on an occasional basis, and notaries public.

Join us for a focused, 1-hour course over lunch to learn about the key issues arising from the BC government’s tax measure intended to slow the housing market in certain urban areas. Experienced faculty will guide you through the complex web of rules in the legislation.

  • understand the general structure, scheme, and application of the Speculation and Vacancy Tax
  • identify when the tax will be imposed and when the various exemptions apply; and
  • navigate some of the interpretive rules that lead in some cases to unexpected results
