*PrerequisiteFundamentals of Mediation, Family Law Mediation Level 1/Introduction to Family Dispute Resolution, or equivalent foundation-level mediation course from another provider.

Learning level: Advanced

This three-day course builds on the foundation provided by the Fundamentals of Mediation course (or an equivalent) by introducing more skills and providing lots of practice opportunities. The course features advanced process and techniques as well as practical mediation problems and practice issues.

Presented through an interest-based negotiation lens, the course also explores other mediation approaches and encourages thought and discussion about mediation philosophy. Participants should expect focused, intensive coaching of role play practice sessions (on Days 2 and 3) by accomplished mediators.

Upon completion of Fundamentals of Mediation and Mediation Skills Level 2, you will receive a Certificate of Attendance confirming completion of 40 hours of mediation training. This course is approved by Mediate BC as an acceptable mediation course towards qualification for the Civil Roster.

After taking this course you will be able to…

  • identify a range of mediation theories and the negotiation philosophies of participants and counsel
  • prepare for mediation including participant readiness, location choice, and paperwork
  • execute mediation process informed by a sequenced framework
  • use questioning, reflective, and intervention skills to help advance the negotiation
  • structure and conduct separate meetings with participants
  • make informed decisions about how to capture agreement

*DISCLAIMER: In order to receive a Certificate of Attendance at the end of the course, learners are required to participate fully in the course. "Full participation" is at the faculty's sole discretion. Activities such as reading the paper, watching videos on the computer, not being present, engaging in phone calls, and disrupting the class with irrelevant activities will demonstrate lack of full participation.

Law Society of BC CPD Hours: 24 hours (a minimum of 3 hours will involve aspects of professional responsibility and ethics, client care and relations, and/or practice management)
