Stress, Pressure and Ethical Decision-Making for Lawyers
Most serious legal malpractice claims and successful bar disciplinary actions are brought not for debatable violations of arcane, ambiguous, provisions of the Rules of Professional Conduct, but, in fact, for clear breaches of obvious, well-defined ethical obligations. Anyone who has sat in on a basic Professional Responsibility class would know such conduct is ethically problematic. And yet it happens. A lot. Even to our own friends and colleagues.
This engaging, highly interactive program provides a fresh and practical perspective on the fundamental question, "Why do 'good' lawyers 'go bad'?" Based on an original short film, written and co-produced by Michael Kahn and his partner, Chris Osborn from ReelTime CLE, interspersed with a discussion among two experienced lawyers regarding the intersection of ethical decision-making and the manifold sources of stress encountered by lawyers in day-to-day practice.
This workshop provides participants with an opportunity to:
- learn how to guard against ethical missteps by better understanding the complex interplay of various factors that can constribute to them
- explore the role of stress, core values, and cumulative choices in the ethical decision-making process
- gain practical guidance on how to better navigate the inevitable tension between personal and professional pressures
- identify and implement sustainable strategies for minimizing the negative effects of stress and pressure in the practice of law
Self-Awareness, Self-Care, and Wellness for Lawyers
The term "wellness" is a common topic of discussion in our culture. More significantly, a growing number of law societies across Canada have identified lawyer well-being as a critical issue that needs immediate attention. But what does that term mean and why do so many of us struggle to practice self-care? We will define a workable understanding of wellness and the positive impact it can have on professional satisfaction and effectiveness. You will leave with a greater understanding of the importance of self-care and self-awareness, and, most importantly, practical steps to improve your quality of life.
Come join us for this workshop and you will have an opportunity to:
- define wellness and why it matters
- recognize obstacles to wellness in the practice of law
- identify and learn practical ways to overcome the obstacles and improve well-being
- discuss how to sustain your commitment to making positive changes
