Who should attend: Lawyers practising in the areas of elder law, wills, estates and trusts, and family law. This course may also be of interest to notaries, health care professionals, and social workers.
Learning level: Intermediate
Planning for health care decision making - both personal and by substitutes - is of increasing concern to our clients and the public. This half-day course will help you become familiar with the legal framework of health care decision making, including Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD), the forms, and best drafting practices. You will hear from lawyers and a physician about the day-to-day workings of the health care system and its challenges. You will leave this course more comfortable in assisting your clients through this challenging and deeply personal area of law.
At this course, you will learn about:
- the legal framework of health care decision making
- important cases in this area
- personal and substitute consent
- drafting forms, agreements, and authorizations
Law Society of BC CPD Hours: 3.5 hours (a minimum of 30 minutes will involve professional responsibility and ethics, client care and relations, and/or practice management)
