Who should attend: Junior civil litigators and experienced litigators seeking a comprehensive refresher on the fundamental components of civil litigation.

Learning level: Fundamental

This course is designed for lawyers in the first two years of practice, lawyers changing areas of practice, and experienced lawyers who want a comprehensive refresher on the essential elements of civil litigation, and law students and articled students. This year's program will focus on giving registrants practical practice pointers. You will walk through file elements from start to finish and receive tips and advice that put theory into practice. Materials will include reference papers, case studies, examples, references to the Practice Checklists Manual, and precedents.

At this course you will learn:

  • how to manage the client and the file properly from the very start
  • best practices for drafting pleadings and affidavits
  • how to manage the discovery process
  • how to prepare for and conduct a trial
  • how to manage expert evidence
  • how to utilize the mediation process
  • how to conclude a file without leaving any loose ends
  • the best practice tips and much more

Law Society of BC CPD Hours: 12 hours (including a minimum of 2 hours involving aspects of professional responsibility and ethics, client care and relations, and/or practice management)
