Who should attend: Insurance litigators and insurance industry professionals: plaintiff’s and defence counsel, corporate counsel, in-house counsel, insurance claim managers, senior claims executives, arbitrators, mediators, underwriters, and insurance adjusters.

Learning level: Fundamental/Intermediate

Gain an understanding of the essential concepts of insurance law and insurance contracts. Insurance contracts have a number of unique features including declarations, insuring agreements, definitions, exclusions, conditions, and endorsements. This course will cover the critical elements of insurance contracts, such as the insuring agreement and the rules regarding exclusions. In addition, learn about the duty to defend and the implications of the tripartite relationship between insurer, insured, and defence counsel. Insurance Law Basics 2016 will provide solicitors and litigators with the knowledge to effectively navigate insurance law and insurance contracts.

At this course you will learn about...

  • the important background considerations surrounding insurance contracts: before insurance is purchased, after the purchase, and after a loss is incurred
  • the essentials of insurance contracts and what makes them different from other forms of contract
  • the tripartite relationship—something unique to insurance contracts
  • the duty to defend and the implications for insurance professionals and counsel
  • the substantive and procedural elements shaping the roles of insurance professionals

Law Society of BC CPD Hours: 3 hours (a minimum of 30 minutes will involve aspects of professional responsibility and ethics, client care and relations, and/or practice management)
