Who should attend: All those wishing to enhance their mediation skills and understanding; this course is essential for new family mediators.

Learning level: Fundamental/Intermediate

The second course in CLEBC's new Family Law Mediation curriculum, this course will give you a better understanding of the nature and source of conflict in the context of family dispute resolution and the role and objectives of a mediator. During the three days you will analyze mediation theories, review the stages of mediation, learn about family dynamics and screening for family violence, and practice communication skills essential to an effective mediation. For those wishing to become Family Law Mediators under the Family Law Act, this is the second of four courses in our 80 hour curriculum.

At this course you will...

  • enhance your understanding of the nature and source of conflict in the context of family dispute resolution
  • understand the role and objectives of a mediator
  • analyze the various mediation theories, including interest vs. rights based, facilitative, narrative, and transformative theories
  • review the stages of mediation
  • receive an introduction to family dynamics and the necessity to screen for family violence
  • practice communication skills, including active listening, reframing, and the use of metaphors
  • review the essential provisions of the mediation agreement

This course will count for 24 hours of mediation training and will include exercises and role plays in negotiation and mediation settings.

Prerequisite: Introduction to Family Dispute Resolution or equivalent training.

Law Society of BC CPD Hours: 24 hours (a minimum of 2 hours will involve aspects of professional responsibility and ethics, client care and relations, and/or practice management)
