CLE-TV: Freemen on the Land 2015 - COMBO

Thursdays: May 28 & June 4, 2015
Time: 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm EACH SESSION

Who should attend: Notaries, lawyers, government staff, and private sector staff.

Learning level: Fundamental

Freemen on the Land (FOTL) are part of an emerging group of organized vexatious litigants who seek to engage the legal system while, at the same time, challenging its authority and practices. The existence of FOTL, also know as Organized Pseudolegal Commercial Argument (OPCA) Litigants as they were noted by Rooke J. in Meads v. Meads (2012 ABQB 571), poses a significant challenge to, and clog on, the administration of justice.

This two-part series is aimed at bringing notaries, lawyers, government staff, and private sector staff quickly up to speed on how to prevent and manage OPCA litigation problems.

Part 1: The FOTL/OPCA Phenomenon (Thursday, May 28, 2015) focuses on:

  • who they are
  • how to identify the phenomenon
  • what is driving the phenomenon
  • more than a nuisance—staying safe

Part 2: Dealing with FOTL/OPCA Litigation (Thursday, June 4, 2015) focuses on:

  • what to do when you receive documents from an OPCA litigant
  • having a response plan in place
  • what to do to shut down OPCA litigation
  • court authorities, techniques, and best practices

Law Society of BC CPD HoursFor the series: 2 hours (a minimum of 2 hours will include aspects of professional responsibility and ethics, client care and relations, and/or practice management)
